Dr. Bimal Bhindi, MD, CM, MSc, FRCSC

Dr. Bimal Bhindi is a urologic oncologist and a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. After obtaining a Diploma of College Studies through the Honours Science Program at John Abbott College, he went on to earn his medical degree at McGill University. He then completed residency training at the University of Toronto and obtained his Royal College Specialist certificate in Urology. During his residency training, he also completed the Royal College Clinical Investigator Program and obtained a Master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Care Research. Following his residency, he completed urologic oncology fellowship training at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN, USA). He was subsequently recruited in 2018 to the Southern Alberta Institute of Urology and now focuses on all areas of urologic oncology, particularly prostate and kidney cancer. He uses open, laparoscopic-assisted and robotic-assisted surgical approaches.

Dr. Bhindi has been extensively involved in clinical outcomes, health services, and translational research. His research interests include active surveillance, optimization of patient selection for local therapies, personalized medicine, and multimodal therapy for advanced and metastatic prostate and kidney cancer. To date, he has authored 42 peer-reviewed manuscripts, a textbook chapter (Diagnosis and Surgical Management of Renal Tumors), 12 editorials, and has presented his work at numerous national and international conferences with multiple best presentation/poster awards.

Dr. Bhindi has also received various recognitions and awards, including the Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology Merit Award, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Detweiler Traveling Fellowship, the Claire Bombardier Master of Science award for most promising future scientist in the Clinical Epidemiology and Health Care Research program, the Queen Elizabeth II / William Kerr Scholarship in Science and Technology, the Dr. Clarke K. McLeod Memorial Scholarship, the J.W. McConnell Scholarship, the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) – Rx&D Health Research Foundation Summer Research Award, and the “Fonds de la Recherche en Santé du Québec”(FRSQ) Summer Research Award. He has also been recognized by European Urology, the Journal of Urology, and the Canadian Urological Association Journal with awards for his work as a peer-reviewer for these medical journals. Additionally, he was also the Valedictorian of his graduating class at John Abbott College and was awarded the Governor General’s Academic Medal.

During his free time, Dr. Bhindi prioritizes spending time with his family. His hobbies include chess, traveling, running, and weight-training. He has previously completed half marathons and the Tough Mudder challenge.

No Show/Cancellation Policy: As the wait time to be seen in consultation can be long, each appointment is very important. If you cannot make your appointment time, please call ahead to let us know, and if you cannot make the appointment at all, please advise us at least 24 hours in advance so that we may fill the time. To cancel or re-book, call our clinic or use the cancellation form.

as the cover page for your referral, and fax the complete referral to 1-833-627-7023.

Note: referrals are only accepted from a referring office (including general practitioner, family physician, or other specialty).

The referring office will receive a receipt of referral acknowledgement from the Alberta Facilitated Access to Specialized Treatment (FAST) program within 48 business hours (hours of operation: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm Monday through Friday; closed on statutory holidays). Once received, the referral will be forwarded to an appropriate provider. Triage will be completed by the assigned provider within one to two weeks, as per CPSA standards.
