Dr. Mark Assmus, MD, MPH, FRCSC
Dr. Mark Assmus is an endourologist and certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is a clinical lecturer in the Department of Surgery at the University of Calgary.
Dr. Assmus received his Bachelor of Science (BSc.) with Honours in biochemistry at the University of Victoria, Victoria, British Columbia. He subsequently completed his Medical Degree (MD) with Specialized Training in Research (STIR) and urologic surgical residency at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta.
Dr. Assmus went on to complete a 2-year Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH) focusing on health policy and management at the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health: IUPUI, Indianapolis, Indiana and was inducted into the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health. Concurrently, he completed a 2-year Endourological Society fellowship at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois focusing on complex kidney stone management, benign prostate disease and prostate enucleation surgery with mentorship from Dr. Amy Krambeck. In 2021, he joined Northwestern as an instructor of urology in the Northwestern region of Chicago.
Dr. Assmus was then recruited to the University of Calgary and Southern Alberta Institute of Urology in 2022.
Throughout his training, Dr. Assmus has been active in research in benign prostate disease, surgical technologies, kidney stone disease and quality assessment & improvement.
Dr. Assmus has authored textbook chapters, research editorials and has presented his research at numerous national and international conferences which have received several best podium presentations and best poster awards. He has authored several publications in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Urology, Journal of Endourology, World Journal of Urology and BJU International. He is a reviewer for multiple research journals and serves on the editorial board of Frontiers in Urology.
Dr. Assmus has also received recognitions and awards, including the Alberta Jenkins and Stephen Buhl Award for Leadership, Dr. Jo-Ann Guinon Memorial Medical Award, Sarah Lopaschuk Memorial Award, Frank Squires Urology Research Award, and the World Congress of Endourology Research Conference Scholarship.
Dr. Assmus has served as a proctor and co-course director for several American Urological Association (AUA) and World Congress of Endourology (WCE) surgical skills courses on Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (Robotic waterjet treatment – Aquablation, Water vapor thermal therapy-Rezum, Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate -HoLEP and Thulium laser enucleation of the prostate – ThuLEP).
During his free time, Dr. Assmus prioritizes spending time with his family. His hobbies include painting, biking, skiing, and travelling.
No Show/Cancellation Policy: As the wait time to be seen in consultation can be long, each appointment is very important. If you cannot make your appointment time, please call ahead to let us know, and if you cannot make the appointment at all, please advise us at least 24 hours in advance so that we may fill the time. To cancel or re-book, call our clinic or use the cancellation form.
Referral Process: Please use the Facilitated Access to Specialized Treatment (FAST)
Adult Urology Referral form as the cover page for your referral, and fax the complete referral to 1-833-627-7023.
Note: referrals are only accepted from a referring office (including general practitioner, family physician, or other specialty).
The referring office will receive a receipt of referral acknowledgement from the Alberta Facilitated Access to Specialized Treatment (FAST) program within 48 business hours (hours of operation: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm Monday through Friday; closed on statutory holidays). Once received, the referral will be forwarded to an appropriate provider. Triage will be completed by the assigned provider within one to two weeks, as per CPSA standards.
